12 Months!

Oh my goodness!  How did we get here already?  Was it just a year ago that I had a teeny tiny baby in my arms?  Now we have a wild and crazy toddler who is into everything and learning so much each day.  And I can honestly say each stage has been equally sweet and wonderful and memorable!

What is SHH up to at 12 months?

Eating:  Now I miss the days of a simple bottle every 3 hours!  Each day is different.  Some days he loves everything I put in front of him and gulps milk out of his sippy cups, and some days he only wants cheese or yogurt and a minimal amount of milk.  It has been a fun challenge to come up with table foods for Sawyer - during the week he doesn't eat meals with us because of a very early bedtime, which left little time for experimenting on the weekends.  Some things we've tried (at school and home) are chicken nuggets, peas, corn, green beans, bananas, grapes, grilled cheeses, pasta, black beans, spaghettios, taco salad, chips and queso, pancakes, eggs, bacon, quesadillas, cheeseburgers, peaches, cheerios, yogurt, cheese (grated and slices), raisins, rice cakes, graham crackers, applesauce... He has tried a lot.  He loves veggies, yogurt, ketchup and cheese.  Those are the main things I can count on him eating!  It's fun to go out to eat with him and have him try new things, but it's harder during the week when I get home and have to scramble to make him dinner.  At least the things he loves are relatively healthy!  He is very opinionated on if he likes something or doesn't.  Just tonight he started pointing to veggies or applesauce when he wanted a bite of something (yes, I fed him tonight, per his request by screaming until I got a spoon out...rough life!).

Schedule:  Sawyer wakes up around 7:45 in the morning, and for the past two weeks at my new job, that means I'm not around anymore.  He and Daddy get a bottle ready and he'll drink and play while Jeremy finishes getting ready.  Then it's off to school!  He has breakfast when he arrives, then lunch around 10:30.  They nap starting at 12, though his naps are typically 12:30-1:30 (on a good day!).  He has a snack in the afternoon, and then I pick him up around 6pm.  We rush home and depending on his mood we either play or I get started on his dinner right away.  He gets a bath around 7pm and then he had been getting a bottle right before bed, but now I just bring his sippy cup of milk from dinner with us and he finishes it while I put on his pj's.  We read books - Goodnight Moon, Brown Bear Brown Bear, and his baby Bible, then rock and most night he'll reach for his bed when he's sleepy.

Sleeping:  Sawyer is asleep by 7:30pm and is up around 7:45am, but Jeremy usually has to wake him up!  On the weekends we can usually sleep in until 8 or 8:30.  I love my great sleeper!  Just this month he's become very attached to this blanket he's been sleeping with.  He's had it since he was born and never seemed to notice it before, but now the second he sees it, especially if he's tired, he gets so excited and happy and snuggles into it.  S takes great naps for me on the weekend, usually around 11am and for about 2 hours.  Sometimes we'll get a shorter afternoon nap as well depending on our day.  At school I think he naps closer to an hour, and he is usually exhausted by the time I pick him up.  In his old class he'd be the last one left with his favorite teacher and I often found him asleep on her when I arrived!

Diapers:  Still holding strong in size 4 Pampers!

Clothes:  Can wear 12-18 month, but I'm buying 18-24 month to get us through the summer.  He's also had to start wearing shoes daily to school and I have no idea what size he is.  We have one great pair, so a trip to Stride Rite is in order soon!

New tricks:  Standing up unassisted for longer periods of time.  Waving.  A lot.  Giving me a kiss (sometimes).  Throwing a ball.  Feeding himself!  Babbling a lot - I might have heard a "daddy" and a "Dixie" but I'm still not sure.  Throwing very dramatic temper tantrums about anything or nothing.  Doing a weird crab crawl where his knees don't touch the ground, just his feet and hands.  Biting me and giggling about it!  "Walking" all over with anyone who will hold his hands, sometimes only holding on to one hand if he's feeling crazy.  Pointing.  The weekend of his birthday it seems Sawyer just started pointing.  Before he'd just gesture at things, but now he specifically points and people and things.  So cute.

Sickness:  Again this month we've done okay.  He got over his ear infection right at 11 months, and besides a little teething had been fine.  Until a couple week ago - Sawyer woke up in the middle of the night screaming, inconsolable.  He seemed to be in so much pain, and I was beside myself.  And at 1 in the morning, what was I supposed to do?  Obviously we drove to the ER.  We just didn't know what else to do and didn't want to wait until the morning or until Monday (why does he always get sick on Saturday nights?!).  He finally fell asleep on the drive there, and we felt silly for taking him in, but I had to go with my gut.  The children's ER at 3am (thanks, daylight savings) is a terrible, horrible, awful place.  Sawyer woke up and was just so happy and goofy.  He was laughing and babbling and waving at strangers.  Finally we got back into our own room and saw a doctor pretty quickly.  With no fever, there wasn't much that seemed wrong but the doctor did see fluid in his ears, maybe leftover from the last ear infection.  So home we went at 7am with a sleepy baby and parents and another antibiotic.  I never want to go back and I can't say I'm glad we went, but I guess it was better than just watching Sawyer scream in pain all night.

Loves:  Dixie, and any other dogs.  "Walking" with us.  Playing with cars and balls.  Cookies.  Playing peekaboo or anything similar.  Eating, though he usually doesn't love what I put on his plate!  Yogurt and ketchup.  Reading books.  His soft blanket.  Being the center of attention all weekend for his birthday.  Yo Gabba Gabba YouTube videos - the only way I can keep him still enough to change his diaper or get him dressed!  Brushing his teeth.  Seriously, he loves it!  Feeding Dixie from his high chair.  Rocking and singing before bed.

I think Sawyer is all boy - such a sweetie and such a stinker at the same time.  He is so, so much fun and we just love him with all our hearts.  Happy birthday, sweet Peanut!
